In Mexico I became transfixed with the local cactus, succulents and the giant maguey plants (think dinosaur sized agave). We had lots of time for some woo woo-tune ups like yoga and a bit of meditation. During which I had a lovely experience with what felt and looked like cactus flowers blooming all around my body. Of course lots of appropriate metaphors there for the taking. But it was a delicious and meaningful moment that I wanted to capture in paint. Also the textures alone on my trip where captivating so I wanted to play with that in gesso's and paint. (I am awaiting my shipments from San Miguel, with all my finished and unfinished pieces. When this one arrives I'll update you when it gets all finished!) There's something so enchanting about the succulents and cacti in that region. Check out Flora below crouching under the beautiful maguey plant. This was on a farm we visited that had brambling maguey plants which they used to make a fermented drink which has all-curing, healing properties. The drink tasted terrible-ish. If you've ever had rejuvelac, its like that.
But the plants are truly giants and feel like they must walk around at night when no one is looking! The flower they produce looks exactly like a two story asparagus! I found them to be stunning and inspiring. No lack of that! I'm planning on starting my own little succulent garden here in Oregon now. A windowsill microcosm of these giant beauties...xoxox
