Last week we went out on a friends sail boat. The water was the clearest I have ever seen it. You could see minnows or baby fish an inch long right through the water while moving. The water was like glass and the weather was so brilliant. We headed for the reef and saw dolphins in the distant. A pretty rare sighting here. I have never seen them on all my travels in Belize and rarely hear of it. But the dolphins headed right over tot he sailboat and decided to give it a good race. You can see my little friend Kai peeping over the bow of the boat while the two jumped and dashed next to us. Because the water was so clear you could see their eyes looking up at us and the scratches on their skin. The kids on the boat where screaming and I think they liked it. They would leap out of the water and play with them. I was quite proud of myself that I didn't fall right off the boat while trying to take this picture. We where going pretty fast and I was dangling on the edge surrounded by excited wabbly kiddos. Sooooo delightful I can't even tell you. It felt like a real blessing to be so close with them on such a perfect day and in such a playful way. This is my version of Santa this year.
It's a little early to report but since it's just you and me I'll fill you in. Teesha and Tracy Moore are at it again and are going to be offering the first annual JOURNALFEST in October 2009! The world of Art journaling will now get that much bigger and more specialized as people come together to celebrate this new and old pastime. I am hoping to offer (still in the application phase) a class called Impulse Collage to share my art journaling ways and try and inspire new ones for you. Namely how to be a fast acting collage freakazoid and jam away when you want to- armed with nothing more than paper and scissors! Gearing up this week and getting my mind rolling about this has really inspired me to pull out my own neglected Caribbean journal I started when I arrived here on the island. The living room is ripped apart and bits are a-flyin. New pages coming to life and all is right side up again.
Well although I have been working away on all sorts of projects it's all still in "top secret" status. But I can tell you that it's a BIG surprise that I think you are really going to like. I will remind you when the time comes for the big debut. I'll give you a hint though. There's new (as in new to us) talent afoot at PAPAYA! We are in the works and gearing up to spread the word.
In between I've still been basking in the lack of snow here and the glorious sunshine. Perfect weather, chilly at night. You know the deal. Nursing my sunburns and tan lines...
And a big shout out to my favorite little Belizean. My nephew Jake pictured here is on his way to childhood stardom. Just got word he'll be attending a nice big show in NY this summer and giving way to all that Hollywood has to offer kiddo's. I know it sounds weird. But trust me. This guy was born for it. Believe me. He was Indiana Jones for three months straight (Including rope hanging from pocket, funky salvation army hat mom found and a constant stream of theme song humms) and I couldn't sit in a certain chair for months after that because it was his ummm...Speed Racer car! He's only seven here. See. Made for it! Congrtulations Jakie! We're so excited for you.
I was just sent this lovely photo from our talented PaPaYa! designer Ms. Kathleen Rossi-Howell. She is also such an incredible photographer. I fell in love with this image she sent me today. I miss tearing apart the studio for her photo shoots and scouring junk shops for props. (Mom I swear I'll paint those crusty old cabinets when I get home!) But she is still at it because she totally rocks and doesn't need me one iota. Love that. Also like the feeling tone of this image for the holidays. Antique or Gothic Christmas. I love all things berries and what could be better than a Victorian album revitalized with modern digital photo's as a family gift!
